DIY Guide to Designing Your Custom Tabletop Lampshade
Here’s how to add a custom touch to a basic lampshade.
Materials You’ll Need
- Basic Tabletop Lamp (we loved an Amazon find with a clean, modern design)
- 1 Yard of Organza Silk Fabric in natural white or your wedding's theme color
- A Strand of strung Faux Pearls (easy to source at flea markets or thrift stores)
- 1 Yard Silk Ribbon or String
-
Extra Items:
- Needle and thread (or sewing machine)
- Pins
- Scissors
Lampshade: Amazon, Pearls: Thrift Store, 100% Organza Silk Fabric: Silk & Willow
Create a Gathered Top with your Silk fabric
- Cut a piece of silk ribbon or string long enough to tie around the top of the lampshade.
- Sew a fold on the end of the organza fabric using either a sewing machine or a needle and thread.
- Thread the ribbon through the loop and gently pull it to gather the fabric into soft folds.
- Wrap the ribbon around the top of the lampshade and tie it securely in place.
Add Layers of Texture
-
Beginning at the top of the lampshade, gather the fabric into soft folds and use pins to hold each fold in place. Push the pins gently into the lampshade.
- Work in sections, layering the fabric from top to bottom to create a voluminous effect that resembles cascading petals or clouds.
Replace Pins with Decorative Elements
- For a more polished look, replace the pins with a simple hand-stitch or embellish with vintage pearls or small crystal beads.
- This step adds a finishing touch while ensuring the fabric stays securely in place.
Finish the Look
- Gather and tuck any excess fabric at the base of the lamp and secure it with hand-stitching.
- Stacked ribbon bows on the base add a soft romantic element and hide the on/off button located on the base.
